Is legalizing same-sex marriage a double-edged sword?

By legalizing same-sex marriage, does that force us to accept all the heterosexual social "norms" that go along with it? It seems to me that legal marriage gives us access to over 1000 rights that protect our loved ones, but we are still free to relate in our traditional ways.

Some straight people might think that one partner in a same-sex marriage is the "husband" and the other is the "wife," but other people's misconceptions do not force us to adopt their misconceptions of our relationships.

As more and more of the general public learns about our relationships, it raises another question - does the general public know too much about our sexuality? Should some aspects of our lives and traditions be kept within our community? Perhaps it is too late. One can find out just about anything about our lives and traditions with a simple search.
